Bridging the gap between basic housing and comprehensive wraparound support.
Rayfield of Light was founded on profound personal loss and unwavering devotion to veterans. Our doors exist because these men deserved dignity, safety, and a true brotherhood of care.
My son, Rayfield Anthony John, was born with a rare condition. Just 24 hours after his birth on January 30, 2000, he was rushed to the NICU at Vanderbilt Hospital, where he spent his first 30 days fighting for his life. We were told he wouldn't make it past his first hour. Instead, he blessed us with nearly four beautiful years before transitioning on November 4, 2003.
His life was supported and extended because of one pivotal moment. While we were at Vanderbilt, a compassionate staff member took the time to tell me about assistance programs I never knew existed. She didn't have to say a word, but because she chose to speak up, we were able to secure Rayfield's vital medication, specialized nutrition, and Social Security benefits. If I had walked out of those hospital doors without signing up, we would not have qualified. I give thanks every single day for that one person who guided our family when we needed it most.
“No veteran should ever feel invisible after putting their life on the line. Rayfield taught us that true brotherhood means holding the door open when everything else feels closed.”
The life-changing impact of these support systems was proven to our family a second time through my father, Wayne Montgomery. My dad dedicated 20 years of honorable service to our country, retiring as an E-6. He was a man of incredible resilience and leadership—serving as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Benning, an Airborne paratrooper out of Fort Bragg, and a Ranger who helped shape future leaders by teaching Ranger School. His service took him across the globe, including deployments for Operation Desert Storm and at the Panama Canal.
Later in life, he developed pancreatic cancer. His civilian job did not cover full medical benefits, but thank God for the VA. The VA stepped in and provided the critical assistance necessary to maintain his dignity and quality of life before he transitioned to the non-physical on November 8, 2010, at 62 years old.
“Recovery begins when a veteran knows they are standing on solid ground with people who have their back. We do not leave our brothers behind.”
People simply do not know what resources are available to them, and too often, they suffer in the dark because of it. Rayfield of Light was created to be that guiding voice for our veterans. We built this initiative to ensure soldiers know exactly what benefits they have earned and to seamlessly connect them with the housing and wraparound services they deserve. We do what we do so that no veteran is ever left behind to figure it out alone. Just as someone spoke up for my family, Rayfield of Light is here to speak up for you.
